One of the things we are looking to set up at Leeds next year is form of mentoring scheme. Basically, every new member who signs up is allocated a committee member (or senior member depending on how many signs up we get) who is their personal contact in the society.

This acts is two ways, first of all, they are there just to give them some advice, be someone they can talk to if they wish, maybe meet up for a drink in the union or whatever.

Secondly, we're hoping it will act as a great way of fostering personal relationships within the society and thereby encourage people to turn up to events - I know I trade a lot of texts and phone calls with people along the lines of "coming to A-Soc tonight?" and if we can develop this kind of relationship society wide it should make it a more friendly community which I would really help to fulfil our aim of providing support for the atheist community in the same way the religious societies do to their followers.

Excellent!

Advice for students is already very well developed within the UoE, so I think if we implemented it, it would take less of a mentoring approach and more of an encouragement to get involved. We're trying to get a humanist contact and possibly a future humanist honorary chaplain at the chaplaincy, so that would take care of the advice from a specifically secular source. But in terms of getting people to come to events, this could really help. Facebook is a godsend in many ways, but as soon as you log off you forget all about it.
