A recent easter episode showed an Atheist/humanist point of view about the church via that all time earth shaker.... ken barlow.

more details here
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8000398.stm

basically he made a few very goo points and now ITV and Ofcom have recieved many complaints about it saying that his views are offensive to them blah blah blah same old pile of shit, because they think that they can prevent freedom of speech and freedom of thought...

Im thinking we should make sure that they arent the only people voicing disgust, im offended that people try to quell an opposing point of view, they would say the same of us im sure but we know that were just much better at arguing about it.... because we are right.

Ha, that's fantastic, I didn't realise there was that much too it I just heard it was a token mention of Humanism. We should send a personal thank you to ITV from the AHS :D .

It is fairly ridiculous - it's the sense of entitlement I can't stand. Was it sensitive to show that episode on Easter Sunday? No. Does that mean that ITV was in breach of TV decency and Ofcom should be involved? Of course not! Fuss over nothing, but at least it's entertaining

I wrote to ITV to show my support for the show and defend its right to show the material.

Got the following stock reply, but its always nice to feel heard

Thank you for your e-mail regarding Coronation Street.

I will of course pass your supportive comments on to both the Series Editor and Producer whom I’m sure will appreciate them.

Yours with Best Wishes, David Nugent, Coronation Street.

good stuff. If you want to give me a quote from your letter I can add it to the story on the website. Or maybe you have the power to edit it yourself.

Incidentally I think this is my favourite name for a thread ever. We live in seriously fucked up times when you have to defend Coronation Street from religious nutters!

It does sum up the craziness doesnt it. Loving the cordial non committal reply from coronation street people, shows the gray area is still in effect on a large scale. Hopefully the next few years will see some changes in that. My next door neighbour is our local vicar Im going round to talk to her before i go back to uni to get some more info on the churches stance at the moment and opinion of organisations like this one, should be fun although my mum has told me not to insult her.

Just remember you're not likely to get a straight or representative answer. Often the better way to tell what a preacher thinks is to ask the congregation... Actually they can be quite backpedal-some in my experience too! The most enlightening moments I had over discovering what my local evangelical church teaches were just from being friends with the churchgoers for a long time and listening to their casually homophobic banter. It's Adam and Eve people. Not Adam and Steve.
Sorry that was completely off topic.

My advice for speaking to the vicar is to record it, or at least pretend to record it. If she thinks there's going to be a record of what she's said (ie that her audience isn't just you) then she's going to be more honest rather than just saying things you want to hear.

At first it'll be all watered down and nice, but after a while, if you keep going, sometimes they snap. Once we were at a debate with an Imam in Glasgow, and when he started losing he interrupted a guy shouting "I can't believe you don't believe in God, but you do believe in 9/11! God is obvious!" and went on this massive rant about how 9/11 didn't actually happen. Us: :O

At the end of the day, no matter how nice a person is they are always going to trip over themselves when they follow a crazy dogma. When you get right down to it, Christianity is pretty clear on homosexuality, blasphemy and women's rights. It's not ambiguous. However liberal a person you are, if you're a committed Christian (especially if you're committed enough to be a priest!) then you're essentially shackled to these views whether you like it or not.

Good luck with your vicar!
